Gaza Strip, Palestinian Territories. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh telephoned Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egyptian Intelligence Minister Abas Kamel to inform them that his group accepted their ceasefire proposal, Al Jazeera reported.
The television station, which maintains its broadcasts from the Gaza Strip, showed images of the population celebrating the news. Palestinians erupted in cheers in the sprawling camps around Rafah, hoping the deal would prevent an Israeli attack.
The announcement that Hamas accepted the Egyptian-Qatari ceasefire proposal to stop the seven-month war with Israel in Gaza came hours after Israel ordered around 100,000 Palestinians to begin evacuating the southern city of Rafah, indicating that a long-promised ground invasion is imminent.
There is currently no comment from Israel on the agreement and the details of the proposal have not yet been released. In recent days, Egyptian and Hamas officials have said the ceasefire will be held in a series of stages during which Hamas will release hostages it holds in exchange for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.
It is unclear whether the deal will satisfy Hamas’s key demand to end the war and complete the Israeli withdrawal.
