Commotion again in the darts world. At the finals of the World Grand Prix in Leicester, Gerwyn Price was again constantly whistled at. Darts commentators Rudy Lanssens and Erik Clarys believe that the booing must urgently stop. “The public must realize that this is not done.” Luke Humphries won the final against Price and experienced the greatest success of his career by winning a major final for the first time.
LOOK. More boos for Gerwyn Price
We have known for some time that Gerwyn Price is the most hated man in darts. The reason? His muscle flexing and some incidents in the past. His popularity took a major hit after a clash with crowd favorite Gary Anderson at the Grand Slam of Darts in 2018. Since then, the Welshman has been booed on stage again and again. In recent months the booing seemed to be over, until yesterday in Leicester.
Price was already there with Price’s walk-on. The former world champion didn’t care and stepped onto the stage with a smile. Darts commentators Rudy Lanssens and Erik Clarys believe that the booing must urgently stop. “The public must realize that this is not done.”
LOOK. Humphries wins World Grand Prix
Humphries was the big winner of the tournament. On Saturday he had made short work of fellow countryman Joe Cullen (4-0) in his semi-final, a sign that his form was going well. Gerwyn Price was too strong for world champion Michael Smith in the other semi-final. The Welshman turned a 1-2 deficit into a nice 4-2 victory.
At the World Grand Prix you must not only finish with a double, each leg must also be opened with a double. Humphries started off a bit nervously. His average did not exceed 70.00 in the first set and he did not get a single arrow on a double. Price – who started the set himself – was the first to take a lead in the match.
That didn’t last long, because Humphries ran out of steam and turned it all around. The 38-year-old Briton won eight of the last nine legs at one point, so in no time Humphries had a 3-1 lead on the scoreboard in Leicester.
Cool Hand Luke had the perfect opportunity in the fifth set to throw Price even deeper into the swamp. An arrow on D20 for the set was missed and Price did something back: 2-3. However, Humphries was not deterred and took the next set after a strong fifth and decisive leg. Set number seven – and thus the match – also went to Humphries thanks to a great 138 finish. He recorded a 180’er a total of 8 times.
