Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant called for a halt to the reform of the legal system in its current form. In fact, he went against the opinion of the leader of his Likud party and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The minister was supported by several other Likud members. If they vote against reform in the Knesset, the ruling coalition will not have a majority.
“Discord in our society is a huge danger to the security of our country. I belong to the right camp and I say today, as I have said many times in the past: we need legal reform. But at the same time, such big changes are made after mutual understanding is reached,” he said.
The minister’s speech was planned for Thursday, March 23, and information appeared that he could resign if the reform was not stopped. However, Yoav Galant canceled the performance after meeting with the premier. After that, dozens of reservists refused to serve. Throughout the weekend, opponents of the reforms held a rally near the house of Mr. Galant.
“A split in society is penetrating into the army, and this poses an immediate and tangible danger to the security of the state,” the minister emphasized.
The Prime Minister at this moment is still in London, where he went for negotiations and where he stayed for the weekend with his wife.
The reform of the legal system was announced by the government at the end of December, immediately after the swearing-in. If the reform plans are implemented in the form in which they are presented now, in Israel it will be possible to forget about the separation of powers.
