Halo showrunner explains why they ignored games to make a TV show

Paramount’s Halo TV show is set to debut on March 25, 2022, but the long-awaited show has gamers worried after showrunner Steven Kane admitted to writing off the game as an influence during the show’s creation.

The Halo TV show has had a languid journey to the small screen, having spent several years in development hell. Iconic filmmaker Steven Spielberg was attached to the show for years, helping spearhead its eventual launch with Steven Kane and Kyle Killen serving as showrunners.

Hopes are high for Master Chief’s live-action adventure, but gamers are cautious after Kane claims they didn’t look to games for inspiration.

The Halo TV show has already been renewed for a second season.

Halo showrunner says they ‘didn’t look at the game’ to create a new TV show

The Halo franchise has a lot of lore to draw from, but in the case of the Halo TV show, executive producer Steven Kane said in an interview with Variety that “we don’t watch the game. We don’t talk about the game.”

“We don’t talk about the game. We talked about the characters and the world. So I never felt limited by being a game,” Kane continued as he described the creative process.

While the show’s creative team hasn’t entirely ruled out the origins of the Master Chief games, the decision to distance itself from the games is likely to carve out its own identity within the franchise’s broad lore.

Speaking about the pre-production process, Kane said that “the richness and depth of the universe was immediately mind-boggling and incredibly exciting because what it means as a storyteller is that there’s already been a tremendous amount of preparation and legwork.”

Kiki Wolfkin of 343 Industries, who oversees the franchise’s transmedia projects, added that “we were thinking of doing something that could relate very closely to the game.” However, despite his intentions to make security more cohesive, he “was not serving the creative teams and their need to express a story and build the world through his eyes.”

Halo arrives exclusively at Paramount+ on March 25, 2022. Hopefully, the wait will have been worth it.
