halo around the moon – Wel.nl

It is definitely not something you see every day. It is therefore not surprising that the Dutch took pictures of the halo around the moon en masse last night. The luminous circle could be seen beautifully in the night sky.

“Our inbox is completely full,” says meteorologist Brian Verhoeven of Buienradar to RTL Nieuws. “The halo is also called ‘small circle’ in the Netherlands. A wide ring around the sun or the moon ”, he explains.

It is impossible to predict when the special phenomenon will be visible. “It’s an optical phenomenon. Yesterday we owe it to a layer of thin cloud, called cirrostratus, which hung at a height of about 8 kilometers, ”says Verhoeven.

It is ice cold that high, so the clouds consist of ice crystals. “The light from the sun that reflects off the moon is refracted in those ice crystals at an angle of 22 degrees,” says Verhoeven. “And then you see a circle around the moon.”

It was also one ‘blue moon‘. That is, there was a full moon for the second time in one month. That is very rare, hence the English proverb ‘once in a blue moon‘.
