A medical scandal broke out in Kentucky, USA. Although the surgery was finally canceled in time, it was reported that the doctor was pressured into “forced organ harvesting“, and relevant departments in the state have launched an investigation.

Foreign media such as NPR and the Daily Mail reported that this event took place in October 2021. As an employee of the “Kentucky Organ Donation Affiliate” (KODA) came forward to reveal the event, It has recently attracted the attention of the media and authorities again.

Patient Thomas ‘TJ’ Hoover II was sent to the hospital due to a “drug overdose” and was declared brain dead. He was pushed into the operating room to have his organs removed unexpectedly, when the doctor was doing the heart catheterization operation of his heart condition, he But suddenly he woke up.

Natasha Miller, a former KODA employee, said that as doctors prepared to remove the organs, Thomas started moving around and was visibly crying. As the doctor refused to operate, she and her colleagues hurriedly reported to their superiors, but were told that “the case must be completed no matter what, remembered, “During surgery, not only are you alive, but you also know that someone is going to cut you open and take out parts of your body… This is the “heavy- worst lie” of all.

Thomas’ sister, Donna Rhorer, revealed in an interview that when her brother was pushed from the intensive care unit to the operating room, he seemed to open his eyes and look around a common reflex action. After Thomas’ surgery, she had problems with memory, walking, and speaking, and she needed to be her legal guardian.

Although the work was suspended, many KODA workers resigned and even had to undergo psychological treatment. Among them, Niccoletta became a “whistleblower” and wrote a letter to the House of Representatives to complain, hoping to prevent similar incidents from happening again and protect future donors.

However, the move was criticized as a crackdown on organ donation, and KODA and Richmond Baptist Health Hospital, which initially treated Thomas, strongly rejected it.

Julie Bergen, president of the “Hope Network,” KODA’s parent organization, said, “No one at KODA has ever pressured us to harvest organs from any living patient.” Patient safety has been a priority. our highest priority ever.”

The Kentucky Attorney General and the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) are investigating the incident, and the family is still working hard to seek justice for Thomas.
