You think you are reasonably safe once you have been infected with the corona virus, but especially the elderly should be careful. It seems that half of the over-65s can become infected again after six months.
For those younger than 65, the chance of a new infection is one in five. This is shown by research among more than 11,000 Danes, who tested positive during the first wave. 72 of them became infected again in the second wave. That doesn’t seem like much, but it is ‘relatively alarming’, say the researchers in the renowned journal The Lancet. “In any case, it means that especially elderly people who have had corona once, still have to be careful,” say the scientists at the Danish laboratory Statens Serum Institut.
The second infection is probably less serious. Moreover, 80 percent is still immune, six months after the infection with the virus. That percentage is therefore considerably lower among the over-65s, namely 53 percent. Two British professors who respond to the study also call these ‘worrying figures’. According to them, vaccines therefore play an even more important role: they protect better than a previous infection.
