De Omloop is a nursing home with room for 24 residents who can no longer live at home due to dementia. The first infection in a resident was detected on September 19, after which the first resident died six days later. A week and a half later on Monday, the twelfth resident has already died. Of the other twelve residents, eight residents are infected with the virus. They are cared for separately from the four who have not contracted the virus.
The GGD has conducted a source and contact investigation, but it remains unclear how the virus entered the nursing home. Fifteen employees are currently infected with the virus and are in home quarantine.
A spokeswoman indicates that it is psychologically very difficult for all employees. Sr are offered help. “In addition, we try to allow visits to our residents to continue as much as possible by leaving loved ones well protected with them,” she says.
