Not only SweClockers are celebrating this year, but also Half-Life 2. The twenty-year-old was recognized earlier this week by Nvidia and Orbifold Studios as developing an RTX version of the game and now comes the next popsicle.
In connection with the birthday, a 2-hour long documentary is released where, in addition to talking about game development, it also talks about “when ran out of money, we were open to cyber attack and an early version was released. online and we were sued by the publisher, while trying to build Steam”. Watch the full documentary on YouTube.
That game is also completely free to refuel from Steamuntil Monday, November 18 at 8 p.m. It’s a special anniversary update with the entire original game, plus the Episode One and Episode Two expansions.
The HL2 team is also contributing to this in the form of commentary tracks – three and a half hours of freshly recorded developer commentary is promised. Last but not least, the anniversary version of Half-Life 2 has received Steam Workshop support as well as a lot of bug fixes and graphical updates.
A full list of activities is available on an anniversary page.

Great to hear, Fredrik! I’d like to add that we’ve also included enhanced textures and improved character models, which help bring out the detail in the game world. Our goal was to stay true to the original while elevating it with modern technology without losing the essence that players love.
Hello, and welcome to today’s interview with special guests Fredrik and Nia from the Nvidia team, as well as Carl from Orbifold Studios, here to discuss the upcoming Half-Life 2 RTX release and the 20th-anniversary celebrations for the classic game. Fredrik, could you please introduce yourself and share your role in this project?
Fredrik: Hi, I’m Fredrik, the developer behind the Half-Life 2 RTX mod. I work at Nvidia, specifically on the Nvidia Lightspeed Studios team where we focus on developing ray tracing technology for games and applications. Half-Life 2 is a game close to my heart, so it’s truly an honor to be a part of its 20th-anniversary celebration.
Nia: Hi, I’m Nia, also from Nvidia Lightspeed Studios. I manage various game integrations for our ray tracing technology, including the Half-Life 2 RTX project. It’s been fascinating to see the community’s excitement for this release, and I’m thrilled to be a part of making this possible.
Carl: Hi, I’m Carl from Orbifold Studios. We’re a small indie team working on ports and mods for classic games. We were approached by Valve back in February to work on the RTX version of Half-Life 2, which is a dream come true for us. It’s been an amazing journey so far, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience the game with these new visual enhancements.
Alright, let’s dive right in. What can gamers expect from the upcoming Half-Life 2 RTX release?
Fredrik: The Half-Life 2 RTX release offers stunning visuals with real-time path tracing that brings the game to life like never before. Players will experience more realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows, making the game look and feel much more immersive. Additionally, the game will support DLSS, making it run smoothly even on older hardware. It’s an incredible experience that we believe long-time fans of the game will appreciate, as well as those discovering it for the first time.
Nia: That’s
