Half-century teacher leaves his wife to marry his student

NORTH AYRSHIRE – A 50-year-old Religious Education (RE) teacher has become an object of public ridicule Scotland for leaving his wife and marrying a young woman who had been his pupil.

Gavin Dunsmuir, 50, had an inappropriate relationship with his student, Megan Raid, with whom he later married and had children.

Dunsmuir became known to have an affair with Reid in 2015 while working at Largs Academy in North Ayrshire, Scotland.

The half-century teacher left his wife and lived with Reid, who is now 25, before marrying her in 2021 and now has two children together.

Dunsmuir has now been removed from the list of teachers after an investigation into the couple’s relationship was launched by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

An investigation found that Dunsmuir was having an inappropriate relationship with Reid by frequenting pubs with him and other former students.

GTCS also found that Dunsmuir had taken Reid to a colleague’s house and was spending time with him with his daughter.

While making its decision, GTCS on Friday (4/11/2022) said: “The jury found that the teacher’s behavior is far below the standard expected by a registered teacher and therefore is not suitable for teaching.”

“The panel must order that his name be removed from the teacher list,” GTCS continued, as quoted by The mirror, Saturday (5/11/2022).
