About five to six months after the second dose, vaccination against the omicron variant is almost non-functional. However, the third dose will significantly increase its effectiveness. This was found by Israeli researchers who studied the effectiveness of the Comizerat vaccine from the Pfizer / BioNTech consortium.
“People who received the second dose five to six months ago do not have neutralizing abilities against the omicron. But they still have some against the delta,” Israeli scientist Gili Regev-Yochay said over the weekend. The Israeli portal informed about it israel21c.org.
However, the effectiveness will increase significantly after the third dose. “It then has about four times lower neutralizing abilities than against the delta,” Regev-Yochay warned.
Researchers at the Israeli Sheba Hospital compared the blood of about 20 people who received the second dose of Comirnata vaccine about six months ago with the blood of people who received a booster third dose a month ago.
“We still don’t know if it will work for months after the third dose,” Regev-Yochay said. “We’ll have to check that,” she added.
The results of the Israeli team of scientists are therefore very similar to those recently published in South Africa. “It’s not a variant that completely bypasses vaccination. It’s certainly bad, but there are ways to combat it,” the head of research at South Africa told them. Alex Sigal.
Pfizer claims that the third dose works against omicron. “Although even two doses can provide protection against the severe course of the omicron variant, according to preliminary data, it is improved by the third dose,” said Albert Bourla, the company’s chief executive.
Israeli researchers have used a real virus in their research. This makes different researchers from South Africa different from Pfizer. They used bioengineering to produce a so-called pseudovirus with similar mutations.
