The 40-year-old owner of 23 grand slam trophies has not played since her thigh injury in July and only then does she not seem to return to the circuit.

“Over the last eight months, I’ve found out how much I miss coaching,” Mouratoglou said in a statement. Halep, winner of the French Open (2018) and Wimbledon (2019), approached him before the March tournament in Indian Wells after a short stay at his academy. “It was out of the question at the time, but a few weeks later I talked to Serena and the door opened for me,” explained Mouratoglou, whose trustees in the past included Marcos Baghdatis, Anastasia Pavlyuchenko and Grigor Dimitrov.
