Judge Ziyech
After 37 minutes of play, the ball landed at the feet of Ziyech, who gave his team the lead with his first ever African Cup goal. The Galatasaray midfielder became the match winner of the evening. But it was not all celebration for the former Ajax player, because he suffered an ankle injury just before half time. Ziyech had to watch the match from the sidelines in the second half with an ice pack on his ankle. The question remains whether Ziyech can take action during the eighth finals. Morocco will play that match on January 30 (9 p.m.) against South Africa. That country finished second in group E, behind Mali.
If Morocco wins against South Africa on Tuesday evening, the number four of the World Cup in Qatar may play against Cape Verde in the quarter-finals of the African Cup. That team, including four born and bred Rotterdammers, will play against Mauritania in the eighth finals on Monday evening (6 p.m.). The possible quarter-final between Morocco and Cape Verde will then take place on Saturday, February 3 (8 p.m.).
