Prince Port. Haiti’s Transitional Council on Tuesday named Edgard Leblanc, former president of the Senate, to head the body created last week to return security to the violence-stricken Caribbean nation.
Leblanc’s appointment comes after weeks of political stalemate and infighting following the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, while armed conflict broke out in the capital, marking a difficult path forward for the council.
The transitional body is made up of seven members with voting rights and two non-voting observers. Leblanc obtained the appointment with four votes in favor, including his own, although tensions remained evident at the ceremony in which the decision was announced. The Council also appointed Fritz Belizaire, former Minister of Youth and Sports, as Prime Minister.
Michel Patrick Boisvert, who was Minister of Finance under former Prime Minister Ariel Henry, has served in the role on an interim basis. Belizaire’s appointment must be confirmed by a statement in Haiti’s national gazette.
The council has also been tasked with appointing a cabinet, signing orders and establishing a provisional electoral council that will be tasked with paving the way for Haiti’s first elections since 2016.
According to Haiti’s Constitution, the country must elect a new president by February 7, 2026.
