Haiti’s new Prime Minister Ariel Henry was sworn in on Tuesday after the country’s president was assassinated two weeks ago.

Henry is installed as the leader of a new government in an attempt to stabilize a country that is on the brink of chaos after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on 7 July.

“One of my most important tasks will be to assure the people that we will do everything we can to restore order and security,” said Henry.

The inauguration ceremony was held on Tuesday. Henry said he promised to improve the gloomy security situation in the country and organize new elections.

Moïse had pointed to Henry as the new prime minister just two days before the assassination.

After the assassination, Foreign Minister Claude Joseph declared himself acting Prime Minister, which provoked criticism. Henry received support from the international community and Joseph said afterwards that he would resign and return to his former role as Secretary of State.

Authorities in the poor Caribbean country have received help from the FBI in the United States to investigate the attack on Moïse.
