PORT AU PRINCE – A gang of mercenaries from Colombia and the United States (US) who became the murder suspect Haitian President Jovenel Moise told investigators that they planned to arrest, not kill the victim.

Leaked testimony of the suspects was revealed Miami Herald and sources who knew of the problem on Sunday.

Moise was shot dead Wednesday morning at his home in Port-au-Prince by what Haitian authorities say was a foreign mercenary unit consisting of 26 Colombians and two US-Haitian nationals. The brutal murder plunged the troubled Caribbean nation into deeper chaos.

The killings and uncertainty over who orchestrated the plot are the latest in a series of blows to hit the struggling nation, which has sought international help.

Washington has so far rejected Haiti’s troop deployment request, although a senior US official said on Sunday that Washington was sending a technical team to assess the situation.
