Haitian Gangs Launch Large-Scale Assault on Government Buildings in Port-au-Prince
Port-au-Prince, the capital city of Haiti, was engulfed in chaos and violence as Haitian gangs launched a coordinated and swift assault on multiple government buildings. Witnesses reported intense gunfire and large explosions, causing hundreds of people to flee the area. The attack targeted key institutions such as the Presidential Palace, the Interior Ministry, and a police headquarters.
According to a law enforcement source who participated in the fighting, the assault seemed to be abating, with gang members starting to retreat. However, it remains uncertain whether the fighting has come to an end or if the gangs are regrouping for another wave of attacks. Preliminary reports suggest that around a dozen gang fighters were killed, although these figures have yet to be fully confirmed. On the other hand, no police casualties have been reported thus far.
The Presidential Palace, which has been unoccupied since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, holds significant symbolic value for Haiti’s federal governance. Although large parts of the complex were destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 2010, rendering them unusable, it remains guarded at all times. If the palace were to fall under gang control, it would deal a severe blow to Haiti’s efforts in combating organized crime and quelling the ongoing rebellion in the country.
The recent wave of violence is part of an open rebellion that has been escalating since last week. Haiti’s most powerful gangs have united, launching a series of attacks against government institutions. Acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who was out of the country when the assaults began, has been unable to return. In response to the escalating situation, the government has declared a state of emergency.
The United States State Department has issued a warning to American citizens in Haiti, urging them to leave the country due to the escalating gang violence. The U.S. Embassy in Haiti has advised citizens to stay informed about security conditions through local news and commercial transportation providers. They have also encouraged individuals to arrange their departure from Haiti as soon as security conditions and commercial transportation options permit.
The situation in Port-au-Prince is dire, with gangs controlling a significant portion of the city. The government’s ability to maintain law and order is being severely tested, and the assault on government buildings further highlights the challenges faced by Haiti in its fight against organized crime. As the violence continues, the international community must closely monitor the situation and provide support to help restore stability and security in Haiti.
