You have deployed two warships offshore Haiti over the coming weeks to carry out surveillance of the crisis-stricken country.
This was announced by the Prime Minister (PM) of Canada Justin Trudeau while speaking at a meeting of Caribbean leaders in the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau on Thursday (16/2) local time.
Reported by the news agency AFPOn Friday, Trudeau said the warships would “conduct surveillance, gather intelligence and maintain a maritime presence off the coast of Haiti in the coming weeks.”
The Canadian leader said the warships would “assist the Haitian National Police in their efforts to control gang activity.”
Trudeau also said that presence Canadian warships in Port-au-Prince Bay would likely prevent gangs from using the waterway for criminal activity.
Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, has for years been mired in a vicious circle of humanitarian, economic and political crises exacerbated by brutal gang violence.
Last Friday, the UN’s top human rights official, Volker Turk called for international troops to be deployed to Haiti to help end this “living nightmare”.
