Haiti takes new measures to resume commercial flights

The Government of Haiti announced several measures this Saturday for the resumption of commercial flights at Toussaint Louverture International Airport, the country’s main airport, starting June 30.

“In the framework of the protection of Haitian citizens, it is necessary to reduce to zero the probability that a symptomatic person will enter the territory by air,” reads a government document.

The measures taken at the airport include the taking of temperature of all employees and passengers, disinfection of shoes, respect for social distancing, periodic disinfection of the airport, the mandatory use of masks, and the pictograms of instructions that must be followed. .

“At departures and arrivals, any passenger or passenger and companion whose temperature is above 38 degrees Celsius will be isolated for consideration by the Ministry of Public Health and Population,” the protocol said.

The Executive stated that it wishes to assure the authorities of the destination countries that the passengers who leave Haiti for their territory have been subjected to sanitary controls.

“We must promote a positive image of the aeronautical model put into practice in Haiti to manage the dissemination of COVID-19 in an international framework, so that the powers and measures are recognized in the region and outside it,” the document added.

On June 21, the country’s President Jovenel Moise announced the reopening of the Toussaint Louverture International Airport on June 30 after a visit to the terminal.

“Gradually, the Executive will take measures to open the country. The Government will have to announce other measures,” Tourism Minister Myriam Jean said at a press conference on Friday.

As long as people respect all barrier measures, the opening of the airport will not be a danger to the country’s citizens. However, the work of the Ministry of Health will increase, said the Minister of Public Works, Joacéus Nader.

“Certainly, there are people who fear a second wave of the disease. It is not the reopening of the airport that is causing it. Rather, it is the poor behavior of the population that can cause it,” added the minister.

On March 19, Moise announced the closure of the country’s ports and airports due to the discovery of the first two cases of COVID-19 infection, in order to prevent the spread of the disease in the country.
