Haiti, President Jovenel Moise assassinated at home

The commando who killed Moise was made up of “foreign elements”, outgoing Prime Minister Claude Joseph said, adding that from this moment he took over the reins of the country himself. The premier called on the population to calm down and assured that the police and the army will keep order.

The murder was carried out in the vortex of an aggravation of the political and economic destabilization and an increase in the violence of gang.

He came to power amidst scandals and protests – Moise, 53, was first elected president of the Caribbean country in the 2015 elections, then canceled for fraud, and again a year later. His effective government therefore began on February 7, 2017. Since then he has been the protagonist of a very tense political scene, being accused, among other things, of having repressed his opponents and of wanting to remain in office beyond his mandate. In 2019 there were violent protests and clashes in which dozens of people died. Moise was also embroiled in a corruption scandal, accused along with other ministers and officials of illegally managing funds worth $ 2 billion.

Tensions and political instability – Given Moise’s repeated refusal to give up power, deeming his mandate unilaterally extended to 2022, the Haitian opposition has responded in recent months by appointing judge Joseph Mécène Jean Louis as “provisional president of the transition”. In February, the security forces foiled a coup attempt and arrested 23 people, including a judge of the Court of Cassation and a head of the national police.
