People gathered outside an airport in southern Haiti in protests. They are unhappy with the state’s approach to them too slowly. After the earthquake, many of them were not only left without a home, but also without food and water.
Dozens of people showed up at the local airport demanding food after the helicopter arrived with supplies. The police had to intervene to allow the relief truck to leave.
Jerry Chandler, head of Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency, which is responsible for responding to emergencies, said he was aware that aid had yet to reach many communities, but authorities were trying to help the population.
“The disappointment and despair of the population is understandable, but … the population is being asked not to block the columns so that the Civil Protection can do its job and help those in need,” he said at a press conference.
Chandler said at least 600,000 people needed humanitarian assistance and 135,000 families were displaced.
At the same time, aid to Haiti was sent by the United States, Taiwan, Latin American countries such as Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela. They sent food, medicine and supplies. Some countries also send rescuers and doctors.
