The United Nations Children’s Fund reports that more than 180,000 children are displaced in Haiti, which is going through a difficult situation due to armed conflict, climate crisis and poverty. According to UNICEF, around 50 lakh people in the country are in need of humanitarian assistance, including 30 lakh children. The United Nations commented on Haiti’s situation in the Caribbean through a press release issued on April 23.
UNICEF explained that two out of three children in Haiti need humanitarian assistance. About twenty seven lakh people in the country live under the control of armed groups. Sixteen lakh of them are women and children.
The Children’s Welfare Fund explained that more than 2,500 people have been victims of armed groups in Haiti this year alone, and that there were more than 400 violations against children’s rights.
Information about the situation in Haiti was given by the Director General of UNICEF Catherine Russell while she was giving information to the Security Council of the United Nations. Catherine Russell said that public life in Haiti is getting worse day by day.
Years of political insecurity and poor economic conditions have led to the rise of several armed groups in Haiti, disrupting public life. UNICEF also reported that many women are victims of sexual violence.
A press release from UNICEF said that violence and insecurity in the country are hampering the work of voluntary organizations to deliver humanitarian aid. The country’s main port, Port-au-Prince, is under the control of armed groups. A number of items, including those from UNICEF, which were to be distributed to people, were held up at the port.
