Hairdressers open again today: what do you need to know about your ‘new …

Long outgrowth, split ends or exploded cuts: from Saturday that will be a thing of the past because then we can go to the hairdresser again. They will have to adhere to strict security measures. Virologists also remain concerned about the ‘1 million extra contacts’ per week that this relaxation entails.

Many have been looking forward to it for a long time. From Saturday we can go to the hairdresser again. Although that hairdressing visit will probably look different from what you are used to. Hairdressers are only allowed to open with strict security measures. For example, a waiting time of 10 minutes will have to be scheduled between two treatments. This is to allow cleaning and disinfection of the treatment room.

Hairdressers are also only allowed to work by appointment. It is therefore no longer possible to walk in for a haircut. It is also not allowed to cut at home. Beard care is not yet allowed.

Customers will also always have to wait outside for their turn. And the barbershop must be sufficiently ventilated. For example, windows and doors can remain open. Naturally, there is also a mouth mask obligation. It is mandatory for hairdressers to wear surgical masks. These always have a CE mark, which recognizes the quality of the mask. They should be replaced at least every 8 hours and every 4 hours with heavy use.

“It is crucial that we comply with measures”

Steven Van Gucht of Sciensano emphasizes the importance of complying with the measures: “Reopening the hairdressers means that there will be 1 million extra close contacts per week that will be added,” he said Friday. “The virus is still circulating, masks are essential to prevent the epidemic from flaring up again. Sufficient ventilation – even in cold weather – and disinfection therefore remain necessary. ”

FFP2 masks are overkill, says Van Gucht. “They are especially useful in the healthcare sector, in procedures involving intense aerosols. This yields less in daily life. They are uncomfortable and too warm, which increases the temptation not to use them properly. For that reason, experts in Germany are now calling on experts to review the obligation there. ” These measures will also apply to the other non-medical contact professions. They still have to wait until March 1 to be able to open the doors.

Not a total stampede for the time being

There is no question of a real rush to hairdressers for the time being, says. sector federation Febelhair. Only the first week or a week and a half are fully booked.

Febelhair does not expect a rush to the hairdressers yet. Customers seem to have some reservations. “The hairdressers’ agendas are fully booked for the first week or a week and a half, but not after that,” explains Huybrechts. “We have to wait and see what the coming weeks and months will look like.”
