Hairdresser in Gran Canaria: – Plot without the tourists

Mia Isaksen (70) has run Mia’s hair salon in Gran Canaria since 1988. In March last year, she had to lay off employees and close the salon on the day.

– I moved down here 35 years ago. In a short time, I took over the hair salon, where I have styled over a thousand ready-to-marry brides. We have now been closed for well over a year. It has been very heavy for the company, and for me.

Isaksen tells Børsen. She has worked with hairdressing and styling hair all her adult life, and considers herself a very social person. She specializes in styling brides for her wedding day, something many have chosen to do over the years.

No traffic

– 85 percent of my customers have always been tourists. The Canary Islands have suffered greatly from the pandemic, as it is the tourism industry that feeds us. But since March last year, I have not had a job to go to during the day. And I could not leave here either, I have not gotten anywhere.

– It has been very lonely and difficult. I’ve been alone a lot.

Isaksen says that she has only received one visit since the pandemic really began to ravage around the world. Last Christmas, her son and his two children came to Gran Canaria, a long-awaited visit.

No Norwegian holiday

Isaksen usually takes time off in May and June to travel to family in Norway and Sweden. Now it will be the second year in a row where she is not allowed to return to her home region.

– Usually I look forward to going home to Stockholm and Trondheim, where my two children live with their families. But I have put all my travel plans on the shelf, and am waiting for next year. Then it will be an extra long Norwegian holiday.

The 70-year-old also says that she plans to open the hair salon when it is high season in the Canary Islands, which is between December and February.
