Customs in Haikou City, the provincial capital, said more than 6.7 million shoppers purchased 51.3 million duty-free items in the province, with the figures increasing by 59.9 percent and 3.8 percent respectively.
Since the beginning of last year, the province has taken a series of measures to promote the recovery of duty-free consumption, including simplifying purchasing procedures, issuing duty-free consumption coupons and holding events to promote duty-free shopping.
China issued a master plan in June 2020 aiming to build Hainan Province into a high-level free trade port with global influence by the middle of this century. In recent years, the island province has become an attractive shopping destination for consumers from China.
Hainan Province, a popular tourist destination, currently has 12 duty-free shops.
