“We were talking and all of a sudden I felt a really weird feeling that traveled down my arm, from my shoulder to my fingertips, and it made them really numb, weird,” recalls Hailey Bieber, while she and her husband were having breakfast.

“A small blood clot” at the origin of his discomfort
Before the arrival of the ambulance, Hailey Bieber explains that she began to feel a little better, to gradually regain her ability to speak. The paramedics take him to the hospital to do some tests, to find out what happened to him and why.
The doctors then discovered that she had not had a stroke. It is a blood clot in his brain, linked to a transient ischemic attack (TIA), which is at the origin of his discomfort.
Often referred to as a “mini-stroke”, the TIA generally lasts a few minutes and leaves no serious sequelae. or permanent damage. The difference with a stroke is that “my body was able to resolve it on its own fairly quickly,” says Hailey Bieber.

The trail of a cardiac anomaly
To understand how his brain was left without enough oxygen, the doctors made him pass several examinations, from the scanner to the blood test through a gaseous echocardiogram. The latter test uses a bubble solution to track blood flow through the heart. And see if the bubbles are escaping somewhere.
In the emergency room, they find nothing. She can then go home.
The next day, she goes again to a clinic, the UCLA medical center, to do more tests, more in-depth, and to understand what happened.
Hailey Bieber learns that she suffers from a Foramen Ovale Permeable (FOP). A hole in the heart that did not close as it should after birth. “They actually found out I had grade 5 PFO, which is the highest grade you can have,” the model clarifies.
His blood clot therefore escaped through this hole and traveled up to his brain, triggering a TIA. To avoid a new accident, Hailey Bieber underwent heart surgery to close this hole.
“Everything went very well. I’m recovering very well, very quickly. I feel good,” reassured Hailey Bieber.
An incident related to taking a contraceptive pill?
To understand how the blood clot formed, doctors made three conclusions.
“Firstly, I had just started taking birth control pills. Which I should never have taken, because I am a migraine sufferer anyway. So ladies, if you suffer from severe migraines and If you’re considering taking birth control pills, be sure to talk to your doctor, as stroke is a potential side effect of the pill,” Hailey Bieber begins.
“The second thing is that I had recently had Covid-19, and that was something they thought was a contributing factor,” adds the American.
She concludes: “Then the third thing is that I had recently taken a very long flight and I slept the whole way, both ways, I didn’t get up and I didn’t I haven’t moved. I never thought about wearing compression socks. So basically all the doctors came to the conclusion that this was the perfect mix to get a little blood clot.”
