hail, lightning, gusts of wind… a look back at a restless night in Burgundy

After the stormy episode which crossed the whole of France, between Saturday June 4 and Sunday June 5, Météo France lifted the orange alert in the four departments of Burgundy. The bad weather was spectacular, without having caused significant damage in the region.

In the aftermath of an episode of thunderstorms which affected the whole country, the orange vigilance established by Météo France in 65 departments was lifted. In Côte-d’Or, Nièvre, Saône-et-Loire and Yonne, the catastrophe seems to have been avoided.

2,379 lightning strikes were recorded in Saône-et-Loire, compared to 2,145 in Nièvre. These two departments are among the five most struck down during the night, according to Meteo France.

In Côte-d’Or, the sky was also illuminated by strong electrical activity, as here, in Auxois.

In total, more than 50,000 lightning strikes across the country throughout the stormy episode, signal Keraunosthe French observatory for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.

During the evening, many Internet users shared videos of the hailstorms of which they were victims.

Avallonais and Tonnerrois were not spared by the hailstones either. In Lézinnes, the streets have become “torrents of hail“.

Hail damage is most visible in crops. Several farmers thus reported, this Sunday morning, the destruction of part of their production.

Also in Yonne, in Saint-André-en-Terre-Plaine, gusts of up to 103 km / h were recorded by the local weather station.

If the bulk of the stormy episode has passed, caution is still in order. Yellow vigilance is indeed maintained, until 6 a.m. Monday.
