Primary school wins Arcachon City Challenge Cup
Hahndorf/Jerstedt. Mayor Urte Schwerdtner recently presented the Arcachon Cup to the 3rd and 4th graders of the Hahndorf/Jerstedt elementary school. As in previous years, 53 swimmers with at least one free swimmer, i.e. the youth swimming badge in bronze, led the Hahndorf/Jerstedt primary school to victory over the cup in school swimming. This corresponds to a rate of 85.48 percent. Second and third place went to the Immenrode primary school with 79.16 percent and the Goethe School with 67.92 percent.
Goslar’s Mayor Urte Schwerdtner welcomed the “best swimmers in the city area” in the multi-purpose hall in Hahndorf and congratulated them on their renewed success. “If you win again next year, you can keep this trophy too.” That’s what the statutes say when a school wins three times in a row. The Hahndorf/Jerstedt elementary school had already been able to take home the trophy for the treble from 2018 to 2020. After 2022, the school has the best chance of winning the second permanent cup with this year’s second win in a row. The comparison did not take place in 2021 due to the corona pandemic. The trophy will be kept in the Jerstedt school this year. The other schools that have submitted a registration of their free swimmers all have a quota of over 50 percent of pupils in the third or fourth grade with a youth swimming badge in bronze. In addition to the top three schools, the Wiedelah, Vienenburg and Sudmerberg elementary schools and the Worth School also took part in the competition.
The students from Hahndorf and Jerstedt not only showed off in terms of sport, but also with their geographical knowledge. To Schwerdtner’s question: “Who knows what country Arcachon is in?” The right answer was quickly found with “France”. As a reward for the good performance, there was an ice cream for everyone at the end.
The challenge cup of the city of Arcachon was donated in 1966 as an incentive to learn to swim and since then has been awarded annually and since 1977 exclusively to the primary school with the most free swimmers in classes 3 and 4.
