28 Feb 2024 at 17:01

An attempt was made to detonate an explosive at a home in The Hague for the third time in a short period of time on Tuesday evening. Two boys aged fourteen and fifteen from Vlaardingen were arrested shortly afterwards.

Around 9:35 p.m., two people were seen in the porch of the house on Juliana van Stolberglaan. After the second attempt last Thursday, the house was closed for a month by order of Mayor Jan van Zanen.

The house was also under increased surveillance, so the police quickly arrived on the scene on Tuesday and arrested a suspect. Shortly afterwards the second suspect was arrested.

A suspicious package was found further along Joan Maetsuyckerstraat that same evening. The Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD) arrived on site for this purpose. He determined that the package contained so much explosive that it could have caused a lot of damage in a wide area. The explosive has been defused.

One of the previous attempts to detonate an explosive at the house on Juliana van Stolberglaan was thwarted in time. Two suspects were arrested during the night of Monday 19 to Tuesday 20 February. One of the suspects, a seventeen-year-old boy from Capelle aan den IJssel, is still in custody.

Two days later, on Thursday, February 22, another attempt failed. A suspect was injured in the hand, but managed to escape. No suspects have yet been arrested for this attempt.

Link with previous explosions in Rotterdam and Capelle

The police suspect that there is a link with explosions at homes in Rotterdam and Capelle aan den IJssel.

On the night from Sunday to Monday, a sixteen-year-old boy from Capelle was arrested near a threatened house on Jacques Dutilhweg in Rotterdam. He appeared to be carrying an automatic firearm. Explosions already took place on the same road on February 17 and 18.

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, the police arrested a fourteen-year-old boy from The Hague after an explosion on Ravelstraat. He was injured in the leg and suffered burns in the explosion. There were also explosions at that house on February 5 and 19.

On February 11, shots were fired at a house on Kerkhoflaan in the Crooswijk district of Rotterdam and there was also an explosion there during the night of February 23 to 24.
