ROMA —
The Internet portal of the Italian region that encompasses Rome was the victim of a hack as a result of which residents were unable to register to receive the coronavirus vaccine.
The cyber attack against the Lazio region was “extremely powerful,” said regional health commissioner Alessio D’Amato in statements to state television.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight and by Sunday afternoon it was still disrupting local internet, he added. Those who are already registered will be able to receive the vaccine, he said, but the process will be a little slower because the data will have to be entered by hand.
To date, 70% of the Lazio population older than 12 years and eligible to receive the vaccine have received it. At the national level, 60% of the population is fully vaccinated.
