Hackers steal $600 million in cryptocurrency from game

The hack already happened on March 23, but was only discovered on Tuesday.

Axie Infinity uses cryptocurrencies. The hack happened in a part of the game whose software is not always reliable. Much of the software is left unchecked, making it easy for hackers to exploit weaknesses in computer codes. A specific piece of software in the game can move a lot of cryptocurrencies, but it is often not clear who exactly approves the transactions.

Privateleutels

Analysebureau Elliptic says that the hackers managed to get hold of special private keys from five people who approve transactions. Experts are now calling for a system to be built in to track unauthorized transactions.

It is now being looked at where the stolen money may be moved. This is being monitored by major platforms on which cryptocurrencies are traded and by market researcher Chainalysis. Ronin also says he is collaborating with the police.

The biggest crypto theft

According to Comparitech, this is the largest crypto theft to date. In February, a similar theft occurred on another blockchain platform, Wormhole. In doing so, such a 300 million dollars looted cryptocurrencies.

In August last year, $610 million was stolen from Poly Network, but the hacker decided almost everything back.
