Hacker remotely reset hard drives

Several users of such a hard drive reported a sudden factory reset on their My Book Live in the past week, writes Motherboard. These are hard drives that have up to 24 terabytes of space for data.

The My Book Live drives are connected to the Internet by default. That way, you can access your portable storage via the cloud feature. However, through a long-known flaw, it is possible to penetrate a drive via the cloud if you know its IP address.

The hacker appears to have exploited this flaw. He was able to remotely reset drives, causing a lot of data to be lost.

Advice: do not connect the drive to the internet

The My Book Live drives are a bit older. The firmware updates for these drives were discontinued in 2015 and they are no longer officially supported.

Western Digital guesses anyone who has a My Book Live hard drive to disconnect it from the internet. The company is continuing to investigate the attack.

It is not yet clear who carried out the hack, nor what his purpose was.
