‘Habitual congestion’ Gangbyeonbuk-ro underground … There is a park above ground

Gangbyeonbuk-ro and Gyeongbu Expressway in Seoul are usually severely congested.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced its intention to subdue these streets and create a green park above them.

The construction cost should be financed by attracting private investment.

The “Parco del Rio” is the largest green space in the center of Madrid and a tourist attraction.

Just 15 years ago, it was a riverside road that ran through the city center.

However, not only for aesthetic reasons, but also because the smoke was so harmful that it put the health of the city at risk, so the city of Madrid embarked on a major construction project, replacing a 43km stretch of road along the river and turning it into a waterfront park.

“The volume of traffic has increased in some areas. However, traffic accidents and traffic jams have decreased. It can therefore be said that the comfort of citizens has improved.”

Gangbyeonbuk-ro, Seoul’s biggest traffic problem, and Gyeongbu Arterial Road between Yangjae and Hannam.

The maximum daily traffic volume is close to 250,000 vehicles and the average speed is around 30 km / h.

Mayor Oh Se-hoon unveiled a plan to introduce changes to Rio Park in Seoul.

Gangbyeonbuk-ro and Gyeongbu Arterial Road in central Seoul are also transformed into green spaces where people, water and trees harmonize just like here in Rio Park.

The plan is to make the section from the Gayangdaegyo Bridge over Gangbyeonbuk-ro to the Yeongdongdaegyo Bridge and the section from the Gyeongbu Hannam Expressway to Yangjae underground and create a green space on it.

It has the effect not only of solving chronic urban traffic congestion, but also of connecting the center of the disconnected city of Seoul with the Han River.

The goal is to start construction at the earliest in 2025 and complete it in 2032, but as this is a long-term project, continuity issues and construction costs that will cost well over 2 trillion won are raised as obstacles.

Although the city of Seoul intends to attract private investment, the possibility exists that expensive tolls such as the Seobu Arterial Underground Road or the Umyunsan Tunnel may arise, which cost only 2,500 won for one-way tolls.
