Habits that Trigger Heart Disease: Sedentary Lifestyle, Unhealthy Diet, and Smoking

Jakarta

Heart disease is one of the highest causes of death in the world. In Indonesia, heart disease is in the top ranks of diseases with the highest mortality and morbidity rates.

There are many factors that can trigger heart disease. One of them is bad habits that are carried out every day. In fact, some have become daily habits that are difficult for some people to give up.

What habits can trigger heart disease?

1. Skinny

The habit of being lazy, or what is also known as a sedentary lifestyle, was born partly because of increasingly sophisticated technological developments. A specialist in heart and blood vessels, as well as Professor of Arrhythmias at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Dr Yoga Yuniadi, SpJP(K), explained that the habit of being lazy is one of the factors that can trigger heart problems such as atrial fibrillation.

“Many studies have proven that there is an influence of a sedentary lifestyle, the habit of being lazy about movement. We know that technology is becoming more sophisticated with the ease of ordering food using the palm of our fingers. Now we are increasingly pampered,” he said at the 2023 World Heart Day press conference, Tuesday (26/9/ 2023).

Data from the American Heart Association also states that people who often sit for 5 hours or more every day have twice the risk of experiencing heart failure. Not only that, a sedentary lifestyle also triggers obesity and high cholesterol which also increases the risk of heart attack.

2. Diet

Unhealthy eating patterns can also increase a person’s risk of experiencing heart disease. Quoted from WebMD, foods that are high in sugar, salt, saturated fat and refined carbohydrates can increase the risk of heart disease and even stroke.

These foods can also trigger obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, which are also risk factors for heart disease.

3. Smoking

Smoking is a habit that is loved by many Indonesian people. The number of active smokers in Indonesia is even the third largest in the world. In fact, smoking can cause various health problems ranging from the lungs to the heart.

Quoted from the Johns Hopkins Medicine page, smoking can trigger high blood pressure. Not only that, smoking can also reduce oxygen levels in the blood, forcing the heart to pump harder. This can increase the risk of heart attack.
