Habitat Mexico: Providing Affordable Housing and Creating Opportunities for a Better Quality of Life

For our readers in the sector, I dare to extend what the energy transition means to live in a better world to the need to have decent housing – mainly habitable – in order to understand two basic needs of human beings ( roof and energy) in the current social context.

Habitat Mexico seeks to create opportunities so that people with limited economic resources can access their own homes, with which they make assets to overcome their condition of poverty and have a better quality of life. Likewise, Habitat works to ensure the accessibility of adequate housing for these people, seeking to help combat poverty and social injustice.

Starting from the fact that our vision – I speak in plural because I have the fortune of being a member of your board since 2020 – seeks “a world where everyone has a suitable place to live”Habitat as a civil society organization has the mission of “bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.”

Víctor Luque, new President of Habitat for Humanity Mexico

At Habitat for Humanity we firmly believe that housing is a basic right and that every person should have an adequate space to live. This is why we focus on working with families who, due to their low income, are not subject to credit or other financing possibilities to build or improve their home.

Our journey in Mexico began in 1989, founded as a non-profit civil society organization that promotes the recognition of housing as a fundamental human right, and one year after celebrating its 35th anniversary, these are some relevant figures of what has contributed to our society.

Coverage in 26 states of our country
Addressing needs in approximately 3,500 communities
Nearly 80 thousand housing solutions
Around 400 thousand people served in Mexico
45 thousand volunteers throughout our history

Likewise, it is important to mention that we are part of Habitat for Humanity International working in nearly 80 countries around the world to make adequate housing accessible to people who have fewer resources. At a global level, our organization has supported more than 10 million families around the world to build, rehabilitate and repair their homes.

Now, to our readers I would like to share my incredible adventure in these last 3 years as part of the board of Habitat México:

We were fortunate to be invited as members of the board of directors and the associate assembly in mid-2020, right when we were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We participated in the transformation of the business model that our organization faced after the change in the government subsidy policy that occurred at the beginning of this administration. I was appointed treasurer – presiding over the finance commission – at the end of 2021, working together with the rest of the organization’s commissions looking for ways to increase our income (resource development) and optimize our expenses (operational costs and administrative expenses). to improve the financial situation of the organization in recent economic conditions. We generated alternatives during 2022, together with Habitat International, so that our organization achieved financial solvency and the sustainability of its operating model for the coming years

Today I proudly share with you, that a couple of months ago I was appointed president of the National Board of Directors, replacing Ariel Cano Cuevas (good friend, to whom I thank his invaluable leadership in times of many challenges for the organization during his management). I assume the Presidency of a Habitat México that has made progress in reinforcing the foundations on which to build a promising future and in compliance with the term of permanence established by the organization’s statutes for said position.

Civil society organizations at the service of our Mexico… If you think that decent housing should be a universal right, remember HABITAT PARA LA HUMANIDAD MÉXICO.
