Habibie’s Brilliant Idea Behind the Establishment of the National Standards Agency

Habibie founded the National Standards Agency and was rejected

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Former Chairman of the National Research Council and the National Standardization Agency, Bambang Setiadi assessed the idea of the former 3rd President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Baharuddin Yusuf. Habibie who initiated the formation of the National Standardization Agency (BSN) has provided great benefits for the Indonesian nation today.

Bambang remembers how BSN can set standards such as in the use of gas cylinders which can ultimately save many people from the dangers of gas cylinder explosions. In addition, efforts to standardize helmets are motivated by the increasing number of victims of traffic accidents.

He considered that everything could happen because it was Pak Habibie who initiated the establishment of BSN to be the one who set the standard.

“Mr. Habibie was the first chairman and he is the national standardization board. So Pak Habibie’s thoughts until now have influenced nationally. Imagine now using gas cylinders like no more explosions,” said Bambang at the launch of the book “I, Baharuddin Yusuf Habibie” written by a member of the Board of Trustees of the Habibie Center, A Makmur Makka on Saturday (29/1/2022).

According to Bambang, when BSN was about to be formed, many parties scorned Habibie’s vision. However, often times, the presence of BSN is very important, especially in determining the standard of a product so that it is safe to be used by the wider community.

Meanwhile, the Chancellor of the Multimedia Nusantara University Jakarta, Ninok Leksono, appreciated the book ME, Baharuddin Yusuf Habibie. According to Ninok, the book brings readers deeper into Habibie’s thoughts, especially about technology. In this book, according to Ninok, readers will also find out how Habibie’s relationship with Suharto was, and the story of the person who asked Habibie to return to Indonesia.

In addition, according to Ninok, the book introduces readers to the concept of added value development, the four stages of industrial transformation and others. Ninok also revealed how close Habibie is to journalists who often cover technology and science.

“In this book, I support that Indonesia’s progress is determined by two technologies, namely aerospace technology and mastery of maritime technology,” said Ninok.

According to Ninok from the book, he assessed that the progress of Science and Technology requires leaders, political support and funds. It is currently assessed is still minimal.

In the book, according to Ninok, he also conveyed how to build a love for the exact sciences. However, at present, Ninok assesses that the younger generation’s interest in science and technology is still minimal. In addition, according to Ninok, the book also encourages them to continue to love the nation’s work.

“We should underline that according to research, the love of the younger generation for science and technology is declining. Only 15 percent of high school graduates who want to enter science and technology, 10 percent go to technology and 5 percent go to technology. Electrical Engineering. But it’s more about information systems,” he said.
