Jerusalem: Israel’s leading newspaper Haaretz’s editorial strongly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the Israel-Gaza war.
The speech criticizes Netanyahu for deliberately putting Israel at risk by establishing a government of occupation and expulsion, and for pursuing a foreign policy that openly ignores the existence and claims of the Palestinians.
The appointment of Bezalel Smotrich and Ithamer Ben Gvir to key positions also backfired, according to Haaretz.
Haaretz is the third most read newspaper in Israel.
Haaretz criticized Netanyahu for shirking responsibility for the backlash from Hamas and placing the blame on the army’s chiefs.
But Netanyahu does not absolve himself of overall responsibility for the military and intelligence failure crisis. Because Netanyahu is ultimately in charge of Israeli foreign and security affairs, the editorial clarifies.
Haaretz also accused Netanyahu of fueling the previous government’s policies to eliminate Palestinian nationalism in the West Bank and Gaza, which the Israeli public accepted.
“In the past, Netanyahu has presented himself as a careful leader who avoids wars and deaths on Israel’s part. But after his victory in the last election, he became a ‘far-right government’ that moved to occupy the West Bank and commit genocide in the Hebron Hills and Jordan Valley.
In addition, he brought Jewish settlements near the Al-Aqsa Mosque and boasted about agreements with Saudi Arabia, which did not benefit the Palestinians.
As expected, there were explosions in the West Bank. The Palestinians began to feel the brunt of the Israeli occupation. Hamas took advantage of this opportunity to carry out surprise attacks on Saturday,’ says Haaretz.
The mouthpiece also points out that the dangers that await Israel have already been revealed.
“The Prime Minister involved in three corruption cases can no longer handle the duties of the state. Because the national interest must also be in favor of releasing him from prison,’ Haaretz pointed out.
