Erling Haaland’s magnificent volley in Tuesday’s Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund is reminiscent of Manchester City manager Josep Guardiola of Johan Cruijff. The Dutch football legend scored for FC Barcelona in 1973 with a similar footwork move against Atlético Madrid.
“I remember Johan Cruijff a long time ago against Atlético at the Camp Nou. He scored a similar goal,” said Guardiola. DAZN while watching Haaland’s spectacular goal for the first time.
Haaland’s world goal against his former club Borussia Dortmund came in the 84th minute. Flying through the air, the Norwegian goalkeeper stepped into a João Cancelo cross and the ball exploded into the top corner. With his fine footwork, Cruijff scored 1-0 for FC Barcelona in 1973 in the league match against Atlético Madrid, which Barça won 2-1.
Guardiola ran out of superlatives for Haaland’s goal. “It’s elastic. This is really amazing,” he said. Haaland remained remarkably modest after his marvelous goal. “They were two beautiful goals. Nice cross from Cancelo. This is an important victory.”
Haaland was particularly pleased with the points against his former team, who left for Manchester City last summer for € 60m. City fell behind after 56 minutes with a goal from Jude Bellingham, but thanks to a fine long-range shot from John Stones and a world-wide goal from Haaland, City still won.
“In the final round we showed who we are,” said Haaland. “This is how we should play. I am proud of the last 25 minutes of play. It was good to see everyone in Dortmund again. They couldn’t stop me. I scored.”
