Erling Haaland has expressed his frustration after Manchester City’s win over Chelsea, accusing Blues midfielder Enzo Fernandez of targeting him with blows throughout the game. In the season-opener, Haaland scored one of two goals in the defending champions’ 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, taking his tally to 91 goals in 100 games for City. However, despite his effectiveness in front of goal, the Norwegian was infuriated by Fernandez’s behaviour, who he accused of repeatedly stamping on him. “He’s always stepping on me, pushing me, I don’t know what he wants but that’s what they do I guess,” Haaland told BBC Sport.

Despite the incidents, Haaland remained focused on the essentials, stressing the importance of the win to start the season on the right foot: “It’s our third season together, and although we’re not at full fitness yet, we put in a solid performance,” he added. The Norwegian also noted how Chelsea had made things difficult for City, despite the final victory. “It’s always tough to start the season, no matter how well prepared you are. But to get this win, it’s really important,” he told Sky Sports. Haaland also insisted that with 37 games still to go, the team must remain focused, while also praising the Citizens’ strong start to the campaign.
