L’ethylene oxide (or oxirane) a toxic substance potentially carcinogenic, used in the oil industry, but also in the medical field to sterilize and in the food chain as a preservative and disinfectant. The substance is also used by the United States spice industry with biocidal effect, to prevent microbial contaminants such as Salmonella and E. Coli, reduce bacterial load, yeasts and molds and other pathogens

Ethylene oxide can cause health problems if inhaled: it can cause headaches, vision problems, convulsions if prolonged exposure for a few minutes. In severe cases it can even cause stroke and even coma. It is also an irritant to the respiratory tract and can cause liquids to pour into them even hours after exposure. In guinea pigs, experimentation has shown that ethylene oxide causes liver cancer and reproductive problems (miscarriages and mutations in the progeny). There are no reliable data on humans. on the other hand, it is established that chronic exposure to ethylene oxide causes cataracts.
