VIVA – Ministry of Animal Husbandry Ivory Coast report outbreaks bird flu H5N1 highly pathogenic. Ivory Coast is the latest of a number of West African countries to announce the outbreak, as reported by local media on Thursday 19 August 2021.
In addition to Ivory Coast, which last announced bird flu outbreaks in 2006 and 2015, Togo and Ghana reportedly culled thousands of birds following case findings in June to July.
Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Mauritania and Senegal this year also reported findings virus the.
“Ivory Coast has identified an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu near the commercial capital Abidjan and has taken steps to prevent its transmission,” the report said, citing the Ministry of Livestock.
Tests confirmed the emergence of the virus after large numbers of poultry in the Grand Bassam commune began dying on June 20, local newspaper The Abidjan reported.
It said that the inflow of poultry had been restricted in the Grand Bassam area, which is about 42 km from Abidjan, and that imports of poultry from other infected countries were also suspended.
Without giving a figure, the ministry said the birds had been culled around the outbreak.
The H5N1 virus can infect a number of bird species, especially those that are farmed, such as chickens, geese, turkeys and ducks. (Ant/Between)
