In Great Britain, a gynecologist sterilized a woman without her knowledge after giving birth, writes BBC.
In Northern Ireland, gynecologist David Sims sterilized a patient without her consent or medical necessity. He performed the procedure during an emergency caesarean section in September 2021.
After the child was born, the doctor tied her fallopian tubes without the woman’s knowledge or consent.
He admitted to the Medical Tribunal Service that the sterilization was not necessary to save the woman’s life or prevent harm to her health.
The gynecologist admitted that he violated the woman’s reproductive rights in this way.
It is stated that the sterilized patient had 11 previous pregnancies. The woman had talked to Sim many times about the possibility of tying the fallopian tubes to avoid repeated pregnancy, but she had not given her consent to this operation.
The tribunal must now decide whether he can continue in the profession as a result of this breach, and what punishment to impose on him.
