Last week, the court handed down a 12-year prison sentence to 32-year-old Van de G. for manslaughter of Esmee, removal of the teenager’s body, fornication and possession of child pornography. After his prison sentence, Van de G. receives TBS with mandatory treatment.
The court called it “irresponsible” to allow Van de G. to return to society without treatment. According to experts, she suffers from a personality disorder with a deviant sexual preference.
There are a number of reasons Van de G. is appealing, Knoester says. Above all, according to Knoester, the verdict is contradictory. “If you say someone is so sick and has such a severe disorder that they need treatment, it’s strange that it takes so long for treatment to start.”
From a strategic point of view, Knoester does not comment on the other reasons.
Esmee’s family are “pretty upset” by the decision, their lawyer Robert van der Laan told the paper. A.D. The family wanted to close the case. Van der Laan also says that the punishment is within the guidelines in these kinds of cases.
Esmee’s body was found on New Year’s Day 2021 in a park in Leiden. The night before she had argued with Van de G., with whom she had been in a sexual relationship. The girl was then strangled. The gym teacher says she doesn’t remember anything about that moment, but he confessed to moving Esmee’s body.
