On Tuesday morning, meteorologists upgraded the “atmospheric river” to extreme weather. The weather will be named “Gyda”, and will hit Møre and Romsdal and parts of Trøndelag the hardest.
The wettest will be from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday evening. In addition, there will be a storm from the west in the mountains.
– We will continue to hold on to the orange danger warning for Sogn og Fjordane and Oppland, and the yellow danger warning for Hordaland and Nord-Trøndelag, says Fagerlid.
First page 2017
The extreme weather will be the first for rain since 2017. «Birk» led to a precipitation record in Bergen and caused damage of several million kroner in Western Norway. Last winter, the windstorm led «Frank» to nearly 400 injuries in northern Norway.
Fagerlid says they are upgrading because they are more certain than yesterday that there will be large amounts of precipitation. Some areas in northwestern Norway can receive up to 200 millimeters of precipitation in two days.
– The forecasts contain at least as much rain as yesterday. The area that is extremely dangerous is 80-120 millimeters in 24 hours, maybe 150 locally, he says and explains that the climate in these counties tolerates poorer rainfall that is expected.
It also increases the risk of events and extreme events.
– We expect the same amount in Sogn og Fjordane as well, but the climate here tolerates the rain better as it comes, Fagerlid continued.
– Comprehensive weather system
NVE has also upgraded its danger warning for landslides, slush and landslides from orange to red level for large parts of southern Norway. For Møre og Romsdal and parts of Sør Trøndelag are the danger warning for rain upgraded to red.
The meteorologist says they are most concerned about the middle and inner strokes of the area the extreme forecast debt. And it’s not just the rain from the sky that is disturbing.
– What is our and NVE’s concern is that we also get very mild air. So we get snowmelt as well. This is also out of season for us to have such heavy rain, says Fagerlid.
Meteorologists are also assessing the danger of gusts of wind from Austanfjells on Thursday. In northern Norway there is a danger of snow.
– It is a large and comprehensive storm system, Fagerlid concludes.
