Completion of rescue of 13 people, early termination of business… Fire department “defective joint of indoor fire hydrant”
(Gwangmyeong = Yonhap News) Reporter Kang Young-hoon = At 6:09 pm on the 28th, at the IKEA Gwangmyeong store in Iljik-dong, Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do, water poured into the business premises due to a ceiling leak and an elevator was trapped.
The fire brigade dispatched to the scene first rescued 7 and 6 people respectively from the 2 elevators where the trapped accident occurred.
No one was hurt.
The fire department stopped all elevators in the Gwangmyeong store and completed the rescue operation in about an hour.
Elevator and plumbing workers who arrived later immediately proceeded with repairs.
The cause of the leak was initially estimated to be a frozen water pipe, but as a result of the investigation, it was confirmed that it was caused by a defective joint in the indoor fire hydrant.
The fire authorities closed the business early due to concerns about safety accidents and forced customers to leave.
A customer who entered that day said in a telephone call with Yonhap News, “At the time of the accident, the floor was very slippery due to the water pouring from the ceiling to the floor, so the situation continued, but the guide staff was not seen.”
He continued, “The parking lot was also flooded with water, so some parked cars continued to get hit by falling water, but it seems that no appropriate measures were taken.”
The fire department withdrew after finishing the follow-up measures at 8:44 pm, about 2 hours and 30 minutes after the accident.
