A food review YouTuber with 510,000 subscribers warned people to be careful about a ‘trick business’ taking place at Gwangjang Market in Jongno-gu, Seoul, by forcing people to buy more expensive food by ‘changing the menu’.
On the 8th, the YouTube channel ‘Tteokbokki Queen’ released a video titled ‘Be careful because you will definitely get hit.’
In the video, Tteokbokki Queen explained the ‘menu change’ method she experienced two years ago, saying, “After being subjected to this trick, I felt like my eyes were opened and my nose was cut, and other people told me that they had the same experience.” ‘Sweet rice sundae’, which comes only with sundae, costs 6,000 won, and ‘Sundae meat assortment’, which comes with meat, sells for 10,000 won. If you order sundae at a restaurant, the owner will say, “I’ll mix it in an assortment.” Most customers answer “yes” because they understand that it means mixing in intestines with the 6,000 won sundae, but when they pay later, they end up paying for the 10,000 won assorted sundae.

Tteokbokki Queen visited Gwangjang Market again, saying, “I was curious whether sundae was still sold in the same way two years later.” The price of glutinous rice sundae rose to 8,000 won, and the price of assorted sundae was the same at 10,000 won. Tteokbokki Queen ordered, “Please give me one tteokbokki and one sundae,” and the store owner said, “I’ll mix the sundae with the assorted food.” Tteokbokki Queen ended up eating a 10,000 won assorted sundae.
Tteokbokki Queen visited another store selling sundae and assorted sundae in Gwangjang Market, saying, “After confirming that this restaurant’s method of selling sundae was the same, I became curious about whether other stores were operating in the same way.” When we ordered “one tteokbokki and one sundae,” the owner of this store sold assorted sundaes, saying, “I’ll mix the sundaes.”

Tteokbokki Queen said, “The restaurant in front of me used the word ‘assorted’ as a hint, but this restaurant said ‘mix it’ as if it was natural and raised the price to sell it.” He then said, “I definitely ordered sundae,” and expressed his doubts, “How many of the first-time customers at Gwangjang Market will notice this?”
Of course, not all restaurants in Gwangjang Market sold food in this way. The owner of the restaurant where Tteokbokki Queen went for the third time told her the price of a basic sundae of 8,000 won when ordering ‘one sundae’. When Tteokbokki Queen asked about ‘Assorted Sundae,’ she said, “It’s better to spend 2,000 won more and get the assorted sundae with meat.”
Tteokbokki Queen, who tasted assorted sundae from three places, said the food at the last restaurant was the most delicious and recommended, “If you want to eat assorted sundae, go here.”
Last year, Gwangjang Market faced a stir with a YouTube video. I ordered an assorted pancake for 15,000 won, but the portion size seemed excessively small, causing controversy over overpricing. As the controversy grew, the merchants’ association ordered the street stall to suspend operations for 10 days. Then, all the merchants at Gwangjang Market gathered together and held a resolution meeting and pledged for change. They promised, “We will strictly comply with the price indication system that provides the right quantity at the right price.”
