The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, called this Monday for immediate action for a ceasefire in Gaza regarding the beginning of the month of Ramadan, a sacred date for Muslims.

In an appearance before the press, the head of the United Nations urged to honor the spirit of that holiday with the silencing of weapons and the elimination of all obstacles to guarantee the delivery of vital aid at the necessary speed and massive scale.

“The eyes of the world are watching. The eyes of history are watching. We cannot look the other way,” the high representative warned, also requesting the release of the hostages.

Guterres called for action to prevent more deaths in the face of obstacles imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid to the besieged enclave while “international humanitarian law is in tatters.”

At the same time, he called to listen to the families of the victims of the conflict that has lasted more than six months by insisting that desperate civilians need immediate action.

The UN chief renewed his call for a cessation of hostilities in Sudan during Ramadan and assured that the Sudanese people face untold hunger, horrors and hardships.

“In Gaza, in Sudan and beyond, the time for peace has come. “I call on political, religious and community leaders around the world to do everything in their power to make this sacred period a time of empathy, action and peace,” he stressed.

Ramadan is the name of the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, during which believers must abstain from eating, drinking, smoking or having sexual relations from sunrise to sunset.

During this period, Muslims aim to grow spiritually and establish stronger relationships with Allah.

To that end, they pray and recite the Quran, making their actions purposeful and selfless, and refraining from lying and fighting.
