UN Secretary-General António Guterres insisted on Sunday on the need for a ceasefire in Gaza along with even stronger and deeper partnerships for humanitarian support to civilians caught in the conflict.

Regarding the ninth Conference convened to promote effective partnerships for better aid, based in this capital, the senior diplomat asked to expand support for the long-term development of the Strip as well as the recovery and reconstruction of lives.

The representative described the human suffering in the midst of the escalation as horrific; with devastated lives, broken families and large numbers of homeless, hungry and traumatized people.

“In the midst of darkness, the commitment of the humanitarian community to help and support people is a ray of light,” said the UN chief.

In particular, Guterres welcomed the prominence of the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), considered the backbone of the UN’s efforts in Gaza, which depends on strong partnerships to carry out its work.

The diplomat thanked the Government of Kuwait, the International Organization of Islamic Charity and its strategic partners for their promotion and effective support for humanitarian aid.

“I know that the people of Gaza can count on your support and partnership, and that of governments, charities and humanitarian agencies across the region,” he added.

The head of the organization particularly welcomed the efforts of the Emir of Kuwait Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah during a meeting with the head of state.

Guterres thanked Kuwait for its constructive and consistent role in promoting dialogue in the region and its contribution to humanitarian efforts, including in relation to the situation in Gaza, according to a press release released by his spokesperson.
