Guta the Amazon: Colonial History and Identity in Ludomir Frančak’s Ecological Activism

This play is the story of a Yoruba woman known as Guta the Amazon. She arrived in Prague in 1892 with the “Dahomey Amazons” troupe. A few days later, she fell ill with typhoid fever and died.

Guta’s funeral was a major event, reported by the press around the world. At that time, he was buried in the Olšani cemetery. Two years later, her remains were exhumed and placed in the university’s collection, from where they ended up in the Hrdlicka Museum of Humanity, where they remain today. In his production, Ludomir Frančaks asks questions related to the colonial history of Central Europe – who owns the bones in the museum? What is the relationship between the object in the museum and the person observing it? Is this observation “innocent?” Is it “objective”?

The director and performer of the show focuses on the themes of memory, identity and ecological activism in his works. Using interdisciplinary means of expression, he creates projects that combine art, history and literature.
