Tricolores paid tribute to the winger after Léo Jabá’s goal and at the end of the game, by Sérgio Vieira; he contracted a tear in the meniscus in his left knee and will be out of action for at least two months
On Friday night, Estrela da Amadora’s success was absolute: they secured their first triumph in 2024 by defeating Portimonense (3-0) and were also able to dedicate that success to Gustavo Henrique, certainly the member of the squad who has been pursued by bad luck and which, we now know, will be forced to stop again.
The winger had returned to the competition in December, after a long break of approximately ten months (302 days) due to a serious injury to his left knee, which resulted from a sprain following a ball dispute during a match against Farense, at the time in League 2 – the two teams would consummate promotion to the top flight – just over a year ago. Gustavo completed the entire recovery, which was documented in a video released by Estrela himself…but misfortune came knocking on his door again.
The Brazilian faces another prolonged layoff, due to a problem with the same knee, and his teammates were not indifferent in the clash with Portimonense, more precisely in the 12th minute, when Léo Jabá scored the tricolores’ second goal and, accompanied by the rest teammates, went to the bench and lifted Gustavo Henrique’s number 11 jersey, raising it and showing it to the photo reporters and fans present.
In the end, in the press conference that followed the triumph over the Algarve, it was the coach himself, Sérgio Vieira, who did not forget to leave a word of comfort for his pupil, declaring that «here everyone counts and I also wanted to take the opportunity to give a very special word for Gustavo Henrique” after last week, in Amoreira, he referred to his absence as “a nebulous situation” that forced him to leave the athlete out of the squad, he confessed, “unwillingly”.
Unfortunately for Estrela and for Sérgio Vieira’s options, the additional tests carried out on Gustavo Henrique revealed a tear in the meniscus – this time, in principle, not as serious as the previous injury, which sidelined him in the second half of last season and the first half of the current one – but that still did not allow us to avoid a surgical intervention, carried out during this week, and leaving the team without an option for the offensive wings.
The problem arose when the 24-year-old striker complained about two weeks ago, and Estrela’s medical department considered the best procedure to carry out, opting for a new operation, the second in the space of a year, as soon as it came across the seriousness of the situation. The downtime should be around two months, so only with an exemplary recovery will the player be able to compete again until the end of the season, an ambition that will now serve as an incentive for the recovery process.
